...ing (2003)
Su-jeong Lim, Rae-won Kim, director: Eon-hie Lee
The moment I saw the movie title slowly appearing in the clouds above the ocean, I knew that I’m gonna like this movie. Heck the openning song is still playing in my head.
The Plot
Sick girl Mina meets free spirited “downstairs dude” Young-jae.
You’ve seen it before? Maybe but there’s more to it.
Why Watch It?
The writing is good. Almost all characters are funny. I even laughed out loud when Mina’s mother joked about her father being an alien. That’s a rare thing for me.
The imagery is beautiful and memorable. Kind of like photographs.
The soundtrack, being contemporary, is good as well. Makes you feel warm, happy and sad at the same time. It fits the film perfectly
But above all “...ing” is a drama about love and getting a hold of those special moments before they pass us by.
Unusual Title
“ing” in the english language is:
Used to form the present participle of verbs
I guess the film tells us that moments and people come and go. The only way to relive them is through photographs, sketches, memories and through people who became part of those moments.
The present is now. Cherish it.
Rating
If you’re looking for a touching and funny drama I suggest that you give “...ing” a try. It may not appeal much after repeated viewings but it remains on the top of my list of good Korean Romantic-Comedies. Makes me feel warm all over whenever I see it. A joy to watch.
